How to Treat Dental School Clinic Like Private Practice

Dental School Building: This is your Place of Business. You will spend most of your time here. Once you are on the premises, act professionally. 

Faculty and Attendings: They are the Board of Directors. They’ve set up the requirements, rules, and regulations in which the members of the company is expected to operate by.

Student Doctor: You are the Chief Executive Officer. You will be acting as the face of your company aka your dental career. Your role is make sure this company is doing well and thriving. When you are not doing your job, the Board of Directors may have to step in. Some of you may say you don’t ever want to be a CEO or own a business. Well for the next to years, your dental school career IS your business, UNLESS you want to leave it up chance in someone else’s hands. 

Other Student Doctors: These are your Colleagues. They are not responsible for your success, however they can make your life easier. They can be a great resource. A quick bit of advice. Be a good resource to them and a lot of times they will return the favor. 

The Lab: They will be your Business Associate. It is very important to develop a good relationship with them. Make their lives easier and in return hopefully they will make your’s easier. There are times when you may want to have a case rushed. In order to facilitate this, develop a good rapport with whomever you speak with at the lab. 

Staff: They will be your Team Members. This includes the people who work at the instrument dispensary, assistants, housekeeping staff, and other personnel who contribute in some way with assistance in reaching your goal. 

Quality Assurance and Quality Control Faculty: They are the Chief Compliance Officers. They can be a potential roadblock to you. It is important to have a clear understanding of what they want and how they want it. It will be helpful to make a positive impression and display your best work when you first come in contact with them. A lot of time people will form judgement of you based on the first interaction or product you produce. 

Patients: They are the Catalyst in this whole business. Treat them well, be respectful, and don’t make assumptions about them. Without the patients, let’s say it will be pretty challenging to run a dental school and business.
